Well, here we are in 2010.
This year is huge, amazing things are happening right now that will redefine how not only how Dreamcatchers works but will bring about such a paradigm shift in youth work & education that people will HAVE to step or submit to extinction.
We are already very clear about what we do
Dreamcatchers saves lives, we work with the young people society has written off. We coach them and train them to discover their passion and the motivation to fight their way back in and prove their doubters wrong by choosing to live an independent positive lifestyle.
Too many organisations who work with young people focus on hitting meaningless targets set by people who will never meet any young people let alone know their names. Dreamcatchers is different, we focus on effectively meeting the needs of the young people we serve!
We offer three services
1. Youth Engagement
2. Youth Development
3. Youth Life Coaching
To prepare for these changes whilst continuing to meet our goals Dreamcatchers is going back to basics (basics for us anyway), we are refocusing our efforts and resources on two of the pillars that supported our initial success.
1. Alternative Education & Coaching (Initially Community Based)
All over the country young people are being failed by the 'one size fits all' education system we have created. Let me be very clear, the vast majority of teachers do an excellent job and are truly inspirational people, they are being let down by the policy makers as much as the young people are!
In response to this we are restructuring our "Personal and Social Development Programme" from a term long course into a full 'alternative education curriculam' and turbo charging young people's achievement by integrating Youth Life Coaching and Learning Coaching into the programme.
Our goal is to have a provision that is specifically developed to offer an alternative to mainstream education for those young people that do not respond to the current offer. Not just for those who are seen to have educational or behavioural 'problems' but any child that wants to learn the skills they need to function in society and create their wealth by doing what they are passionate about rather than what 'society' deems appropriate for them.
We will work with smaller groups, more focussed and intensive programmes that include work placements and micro social enterprise creation.
This will take some time, we don't even have a building where we can deliver this, it will happen though I can promise you that.
2. Employability and Enterprise
We have created a truly innovative programme that ensures by the time the young people leave us they will either have a job they are passionate about or they will have started their own business with our support.
The programme encapsulates cutting edge personal development technologies with the most up to date applications of emotional intelligence. This ensure the young people will not only be ready, willing and able to work but they will be very attractive to employers.
Right now there is the highest youth unemployment in history! plus there is a huge skills gap...... any guesses how this has happened?..... I have my conclusions!
This programme will be ran in the very heart of the communities we serve, by combining personal development, social enterprise, real work experience (not just some token gesture nonsense) and the opportunity to support the regeneration of their own community, young people will discover their passions and the motivation they need to stand tall and take control of their futures today.
Our aim is to create a platform that allows young people to be seen as the leaders of TODAY, why wait they will inherit the planet anyway get them involved NOW. There is no creature on earth as innovative and creative as a child, we teach it out of them through education and social expectancy. Let us harness it today, they were born with those gifts for a reason!
Every generation creates global problems that we then hand to our children in the hope we have prepared them well enough to solve them.
Ask a child how we should end poverty, climate change, racism, the unstable economy etc etc and then listen...... we have landed on the moon, we have created the internet, we have built weapons that can destroy civilisation with the touch of a button BUT we still have a conveyor belt mentality of raising our young, if you don't fit the mould you get cast into the societal wilderness.
People often misinterpret my stance on education, they think i am against it. I love education, without it the human race would be lost. All I want is an alternative if people need or want it. Not everyone wants a Mcdonalds experience some people want a Michelin Star.
